Community Voices: Workshops

Bringing residents together to shape Quadra Island's economic future through collaborative engagement and shared vision.
Community Voices / Workshops

Why workshops mattered for this project

Two community workshops in June and October 2025 brought residents, business owners, and community leaders together from each sector of the economy to discuss values, strengths, challenges, gaps, and opportunities.
The June 3 workshop focused on vision and values: what matters most to people on Quadra, what is working well, and where the biggest challenges lie.
The October 4 workshop built on this foundation, together with the survey and interview results, to move "from vision to action" by developing concrete project ideas and priorities.
Insights from both workshops feed directly into the Economic Diversification Plan. They shape the guiding values, priority themes, and practical actions proposed in the Economic Diversification Roadmap.

June 3, 2025 – Vision and Values Workshop (at a glance)

The first workshop, held at the Quadra Island Community Centre, brought together around fifty participants from across the island. Through four activities, participants:

Named the values

Named the values that should guide economic decisions on Quadra Island.

Explored well-being

Explored ideas across four dimensions of well-being: Economic, Environmental, Socio-Cultural, and Psychological.

Mapped strengths

Mapped existing strengths and assets, as well as key challenges.

Identified gaps

Identified gaps and brainstormed "bridges" and opportunities to move toward the future they want.
The June 3 workshop provided the core value framework for the project and highlighted early themes such as housing and affordability, environmental stewardship, community connection and belonging, and the need for coordination and capacity to move ideas forward.

October 4, 2025 – From Vision to Action Workshop (at a glance)

The second workshop, held at Cape Mudge Hall (We Wai Kai), brought forty-two participants together to validate themes from earlier engagement and develop concrete actions. Participants:

Reviewed and prioritized themes

Reviewed and prioritized themes from the first workshop, survey, and interviews through a gallery walk.

Worked in themed groups

Worked in themed small groups to draft 5–10 year "North Star" goals and identify practical steps, partners, barriers, and readiness.

Voted on action ideas

Voted on action ideas to highlight what felt most urgent and achievable.

Reflected on cross-cutting needs

Reflected on cross-cutting needs such as housing, funding and grant-writing capacity, collaboration, and community resilience.
The October 4 workshop translated big-picture aspirations into community-generated action ideas. These ideas, organized by theme and readiness, underpin the recommended initiatives in the Economic Diversification Plan.
